Floating Grounds

The project floating grounds is planned to fill the gaps of the homogenous block structure of Berlin’s years of rapid industrial expansion in the end of 19th century. The gap is not a building-site, it is a historical reference, designed to connect backyards to the street (fire-fighters). In average, it is 3-5 meters wide, and appears regularly in different city-areas.

Each floating ground module closes the existing development-line on the street and leaves the ground-level open. Thus, pedestrians, cars, views and sounds can pass beneath the slabs, leaving the inhabitants benefit from good view and insulation conditions. Nevertheless the position connects them visually to the urban context and provides direct communication with the surroundings. The backyard is still accessible. The static is independent from the neighbouring houses. The plot of land is very inexpensive - it is an overbuilding of a pathway and gives us the chance to produce inexpensive city-apartments.

Floating grounds does not conform to the homogenous style of the repeating neighbours and gives a refreshing alienated impression. Not yielding to the seemingly impossible construction conditions, this artificial parasite charges its surroundings with promising energy of the customized. The former narrow gap is transformed into an activated opening brought to consciousness, that reveals its special communication with the city by night. Its interactive light slab reacts to pedestrians passing lighting their way underneath it.

The minimal appartments provide a polarised division between a function-bearing wall and connected open space. Subdivision of the open space is achieved by movable walls/screens with a differentiation of permeability. The open flexible floor plan will be charged with atmosphere by architectonical objects, strong differentiation of wall material and a light ceiling, which not only illuminates the deep housing unit, but also creates illusions, animations or interactions according to the atmosphere desired.
Moving the space dividers the user can mix, separate and overlay microambiences and the outside impression.

A very smooth picture is achieved by using a difuser over a less dense layer of LEDs .
Built project and progress

Hoyer, Schindele, Hirschmüller Architekten have so far completed one floating unit project in Berlin, Choriner Straße. It is a horizontally connected extension to 19th century housing building.
At the moment we are designing a prototype of the autonomous floating grounds-building in the urban gap in Berlin, Kreuzbergstraße and at the same time looking for potentials in many similar sites in the city.
